Have you ever witnessed others delighting in their grand finale while you’re experiencing singular fireworks or even some duds? For myself, when feeling down with an obscured sense of purpose, I self-judge and compare to friends who have been there done that - retired at 30, met the love of their life, have the perfect family, became an iconic performer, launched a fortune 500.
Though we try not to compare, part of us does - our human nature. Genuinely we are thrilled for people’s successes and simultaneously they spark reflection: where am I, who am I?
Recently I have encountered so many talented artists, healers, visionaries, and leaders who are just beginning their bloom. My old soccer coach once asked, “who’s the best player in the world?” We all screamed out names like Mia Hamm or Pelé. Actually he said “it’s probably some guy in Africa playing pick up who you’ll never see nor will ever join a professional league.”
Once traveling in a small, remote town in southern Spain, I remember seeing the most beautiful humans in the world. Everyone who walked by looked more gorgeous and radiant than anyone I’d ever seen in life, on a magazine cover, or in a movie. I remember thinking, “Wow! You could pluck any one person from this town, put them in Hollywood, and they’d be a star.”
My point is that the most delicious food, the most majestic places, the most beautiful people, the most talented players, movers, or artists will never be “known” or “popular” - but does that matter, does it change anything, or affect impact? “Most” is subjective anyway.
With the influx of media and technology such as Instagram, it’s not hard to open your phone and ingest a whole lot of content in a few seconds and begin the mental cascade. A few things I like to remember are: 1. we are all unique creatures and the beauty of one butterfly does not affect the beauty of another. 2. Some plants flower within days while others take months or years.
