In 2006, my friend Lisa invited me to pole at BeSpun by Leigh Ann Reilly. At the time, I was working in Westwood, and driving to Hollywood in rush hour was not appealing. Instead, I referred my friend/co-worker, Perri, to meet my friends and try lessons. She became an avid student and teacher.
In 2007, I moved to Japan for a year. From afar, Lisa would update me on her progress and I would watch Leigh Ann’s mesmerizing YouTube videos.
Upon arriving home in 2008, I decided to take a class at BeSpun (then located on La Brea/Hollywood). The first week, I felt clumsy, ungraceful and weak!
However, after executing a fun spin and pirouette, I became hooked and began attending classes 5 days/week. All I could think about was pole!
Back in those days we would spend all night at the gym dancing, creating new moves (~6:00pm-10:00pm). I naturally gravitated towards helping others learn and started teaching in 2009.
The first day of pole to present has been a transformative journey from learning, to teaching, to performing, to competing, to working in the industry and to discovering self.
Pole has always been an outlet for self-challenge, expression, creativity and movement. Unlike traditional fitness where the majority of action occurs in linear planes, pole dance movement is circular, elliptical, and rotational. This latter type of motion activates energetic centers (especially the emotional body at the hips). Pole has helped energize the divine feminine, awaken the inner goddess, and ultimately free my soul!
Now I run the PCS (Pole Championship Series), lead XPERT Pole and Aerial Fitness Teacher Trainings, instruct classes, jam and perform for fun. I enjoy my ever-changing relationship with pole and look forward to what the future holds!
